Stop us if you’ve heard this one before. Apple is preparing a software update for an iPhone from 2020 to address a years-old health complaint only raised in one market.
Specifically, Apple is once again updating iPhone 12 models to address a non-issue pushed by health authorities in France. This time the software update will apply to all iPhone 12 models in EU countries, and not just France.
Here’s a recap from our coverage two years ago:
- French authorities determined that the iPhone 12 no longer passed radiation exposure testing limits on the day Apple discontinued the iPhone 12 and unveiled the iPhone 15
- Apple downplayed the issue while acknowledging it would work with regulators to remedy the situation
- Apple submitted a software update for French regulators to evaluate as a fix for the issue
- France approved the fix and dropped its threat of recalling all iPhone 12 units sold in the country
At the time, Apple used iOS 17.1 to address the non-issue that was raised by a non-standard test. Apple has always disagreed that the iPhone 12 exceeded radiation emission standards while insisting that the iPhone 12 was safe to use. While the iPhone 12 has long been discontinued, the 2020 model still receives iOS updates and remains in use by some.
After addressing the claim in a software update released three years after the iPhone 12 was introduced in France, Apple is now readying a software update five years after the iPhone 12 was introduced in the EU.
“We continue to disagree with the French ANFR’s testing approach,” Apple says in a statement provided to media. The statement goes on to say that Apple will “respect the European Commission’s decision” with the upcoming software update for iPhone 12, and that customers “can use their iPhone 12 with full confidence, just as they always have.”
